NR439 Week 3 Discussion: Qualitative Research

Directions

Step 1: Consider the Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome, and Time (PICOT) question developed in Week 2.

Step 2: Locate one qualitative article that addresses your PICOT question and answer the discussion prompts below with explanation and detail.

Paragraph one: Write your PICOT question. Discuss the qualitative nature and purpose of the study you have chosen. How do you know this is a qualitative study? What type of qualitative study is it? What is the purpose of the study?

Paragraph two: Discuss the method of the study. How did the researchers collect the data? Is this method adequate to address the purpose of the study? What is the sample in the study, and is it appropriate, given the method?

Paragraph three: Summarize the findings of the study. What is the projected significance of the study to nursing? What are the recommendations for future study?

How to Approach Each Question

Paragraph One – PICOT and Study Nature:

  • Start by restating your Week 2 PICOT question clearly.

  • Explain why the study is qualitative (e.g., focus on experiences, perceptions, or meanings rather than numerical data).

  • Identify the type: phenomenology (exploring lived experiences), ethnography (culture-focused), grounded theory (developing theory), case study, or narrative.

  • State the purpose: why the researchers did the study and what question they aimed to answer.

Paragraph Two – Study Method:

  • Describe the data collection methods: interviews, focus groups, observations, or document analysis.

  • Explain why these methods are suitable for exploring the topic and answering the study’s purpose.

  • Detail the sample size and characteristics (e.g., 15 hospitalized adult patients in a medical-surgical unit).

  • Discuss whether the sample aligns with the method (qualitative studies usually have smaller, targeted samples for in-depth exploration).

Paragraph Three – Findings and Significance:

  • Summarize the main themes, insights, or conclusions from the study.

  • Explain how these findings could impact nursing practice (e.g., improving patient safety, understanding barriers to intervention, informing policy).

  • Mention recommendations for future research, such as exploring additional populations, testing interventions, or validating findings quantitatively.
