Course
NR546 Advanced Pharmacology: Psychopharmacology for Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
Preparing the Discussion
Follow these guidelines when completing each component of the discussion. Contact your course faculty if you have questions.
General Directions
Review the provided case study to complete this week’s discussion.
Include the following sections:
- Application of Course Knowledge: Answer all questions/criteria with explanations and detail.
- Select one drug to treat the diagnosis(es) or symptoms.
- List medication class and mechanism of action for the chosen medication.
- Write the prescription in prescription format.
- Provide an evidence-based rationale for the selected medication using at least one scholarly reference. Textbooks may be used for additional references but are not the primary reference.
- List any side effects or adverse effects associated with the medication.
- Include any required diagnostic testing. State the time frame for this testing (testing is before medication initiation or q 3 months, etc.). Includes normal results range for any listed laboratory tests.
- Provide a minimum of three appropriate medication-related teaching points for the client and/or family.
How to approach this assignment
Step 1: Identify the Diagnosis
From the case study:
What is the primary psychiatric diagnosis?
Are there secondary diagnoses?
This becomes your foundation.
Step 2: Choose ONE Medication
Pick the most appropriate medication for that diagnosis.
Example:
Major Depressive Disorder → SSRI
ADHD → Stimulant
Bipolar disorder → Mood stabilizer or atypical antipsychotic
Schizophrenia → Antipsychotic
Step 3: Write the Sections Required
You now fill in the assignment like this:
Drug Selection
“I selected ___ for the treatment of ___.”
Explain why it fits the symptoms in the case.
Medication Class & Mechanism
What class is it?
How does it work in the brain?
What neurotransmitter does it affect?
Example:
“It inhibits serotonin reuptake, increasing serotonin availability in the synaptic cleft.”
Write the Prescription
You must format it like a real prescription:
Patient Name
Date
Medication name 10 mg
Take one tablet by mouth daily
Disp #30
Refills: 2
Evidence-Based Rationale
Now explain:
Why this medication is first-line
Why it’s better than alternatives for this patient
Support with one scholarly reference
Side Effects
List:
Common
Serious
Any black box warnings (if applicable)
Diagnostic Testing
State:
What labs are needed BEFORE starting?
What labs are needed AFTER?
How often?
Normal reference ranges
Example:
TSH 0.4–4.0 mIU/L
Sample Solution
Over the past week, your discussion posts have demonstrated a thoughtful and evidence-based approach to medication selection, monitoring, and patient education for depressive and mood disorders. Many of you appropriately identified SSRIs—such as escitalopram and sertraline—as first-line agents for major depressive disorder (MDD)……Click below to access the full sample solution (PDF)
