General Directions
Review the provided case study to complete this week’s discussion.
Include the following sections:
- Application of Course Knowledge: Answer all questions/criteria with explanations and detail.
- Select one drug to treat the diagnosis(es) or symptoms.
- List medication class and mechanism of action for the chosen medication.
- Write the prescription in prescription format.
- Provide an evidence-based rationale for the selected medication using at least one scholarly reference. Textbooks may be used for additional references but are not the primary reference.
- List any side effects or adverse effects associated with the medication.
- Include any required diagnostic testing. State the time frame for this testing (testing is before medication initiation or q 3 months, etc.). Includes normal results range for any listed laboratory tests.
- Provide a minimum of three appropriate medication-related teaching points for the client and/or family.
How to Approach This Assignment
1. Identify the Primary Diagnosis
Carefully review the case study.
Determine the most appropriate diagnosis or priority symptom to treat.
2. Select the Most Appropriate Medication
Choose one first-line, evidence-based medication.
Consider patient-specific factors (age, comorbidities, contraindications, pregnancy status, renal/hepatic function).
3. Explain the Drug Clearly
Identify the medication class.
Describe the mechanism of action in relation to the disease process.
Connect the drug’s action to symptom improvement.
4. Write the Prescription Properly
Include:
Drug name (generic preferred)
Dose
Route
Frequency
Duration
Quantity to dispense
Refills
Special instructions
5. Support with Evidence
Use at least one recent peer-reviewed scholarly source.
Explain why this medication is preferred over alternatives.
6. Address Safety
List common side effects.
Include serious adverse effects.
Identify contraindications if relevant.
7. Include Required Monitoring
State required labs or diagnostic testing.
Clarify timing (baseline, ongoing, q3 months, annually, etc.).
Provide normal reference ranges.
8. Provide Patient Education
Include at least three medication-related teaching points.
Focus on adherence, side effects, safety, and when to seek care.
Key Concepts to Focus On
Evidence-based medication selection
Mechanism of action linked to disease process
Proper prescription format
Safety and adverse effect monitoring
Diagnostic testing and lab interpretation
Patient education and adherence
Clinical judgment and individualized care
Sample Solution
- Application of Course Knowledge: Answer all questions/criteria with explanations and detail.
- Select one drug to treat the diagnosis(es) or symptoms. The drug that I chose is naltrexone due to the patient’s diagnosis of alcohol use disorder.
- List medication class and mechanism of action for the chosen medication.
Naltrexone is a mu opioid receptor antagonist, and it works by blocking the mu opioid receptors and thus preventing the binding of exogenous opioids at the receptor sites, which prevents the pleasurable effects of opioids.…..Click below to access the full sample solution (PDF)
