Preparing the Discussion
Application of Course Knowledge
a. What is the study design (case-control or cohort study)? Briefly describe the key features of the chosen study design. Discuss any strengths or limitations associated with the chosen study design.
b. Describe the sampling method employed in the study. Was it representative of the target population? Discuss any potential sources of selection bias.
c. Assess the quality of data collection methods. Were the measures used valid and reliable? Discuss any challenges or limitations associated with data collection in the study.
d. Summarize the main findings of the study.
e. Describe how you may apply these findings to your practice as an advanced practice nurse.
How to Approach Each Question
1a: Study Design
Identify whether the study is a case-control or cohort study.
Briefly explain how that design works:
Case-control: compares individuals with a condition (cases) to those without (controls) to identify past exposures.
Cohort: follows a group over time to see how exposure affects outcomes.
Discuss strengths (e.g., cost-effective, good for rare diseases, establishes temporal relationship in cohort studies).
Discuss limitations (e.g., recall bias in case-control, time-consuming and expensive in cohort studies).
1b: Sampling Method
Identify how participants were selected (random sampling, convenience sampling, purposive sampling, etc.).
Determine whether the sample reflects the target population.
Discuss possible selection bias (e.g., limited geographic area, voluntary participation, exclusion criteria).
1c: Data Collection Quality
Describe how data were gathered (surveys, medical records, laboratory tests, interviews).
Discuss validity (did the tools measure what they intended to measure?)
Discuss reliability (were the results consistent and reproducible?).
Identify challenges (missing data, recall bias, incomplete records, measurement errors).
1d: Main Findings
Summarize the most important results clearly and concisely.
Highlight statistical significance if provided.
Focus on findings related to exposure and outcomes.
1e: Application to Practice
Reflect on how the findings influence advanced practice nursing.
Consider implications for patient education, screening, prevention, clinical decision-making, or policy advocacy.
Be specific about how you would integrate the evidence into your role.
Sample Solution
What is the study design (case-control or cohort study)? Briefly describe the key features of the chosen study design. Discuss any strengths or limitations associated with the chosen study design. The scholarly article I chose is a case-control study. This case-control study is population-based and was conducted to explore and compare the polygenic risk scores for severe mental disorders between women who experience postpartum depression (PPD) and those who do not.….Click below to access the full sample solution (PDF)
