NURS-4210M Week 3: Discussion Evaluating Culture From the Nursing Perspective

Case Study Discussion – How to Approach It

Questions (As Given)

  1. What happened to change the culture of smoking in Poland?

  2. Understanding that we all have bias when discussing health issues and precipitating factors, what social and political factors allowed cigarette smoking to become a part of the Polish culture?

  3. Reflecting on your own practice:

    • How do you overcome cultural bias?

    • Do you find it more difficult to deal with some groups than others?

    • How do people use the cultural information they learn about others?

    • Do you think this leads to stereotyping?

    • Does cultural knowledge influence or change your practice and interactions with others?

How to Approach It

Step 1 – Examine Poland’s Smoking Culture

  • Identify the key events, policies, or interventions that reduced smoking rates in Poland (e.g., public health campaigns, legislative changes, taxation, awareness programs).

  • Focus on both the social changes (shift in attitudes toward smoking) and political measures (government regulations or initiatives).

Step 2 – Consider Social and Political Factors

  • Analyze why smoking became so prevalent initially: economic conditions, political influences, cultural norms, advertising, peer behaviors, or accessibility of cigarettes.

  • Reflect on how these factors shaped public perception and normalized smoking within Polish society.

Step 3 – Reflect on Cultural Bias in Nursing Practice

  • Think about your own experiences in clinical practice and how biases can influence care delivery.

  • Consider strategies to overcome bias, such as cultural competence, self-awareness, evidence-based practice, and respectful communication.

  • Reflect on how cultural knowledge affects interactions with patients—both positively (better understanding of patient needs) and negatively (risk of stereotyping).

  • Provide examples if possible of how understanding cultural context has changed or improved your nursing practice.

Sample Solution

Tobacco taxes were able to be kept low and were cheap to buy due to the government (Jassem et al. 2014, p. 281). There was a lot of advertising that was occurring, which consequently increased the tobacco use among younger people. However, democratic changes occurred which led to civil society development (Jassem et al., 2014, p. 281). With that led to organizations outside of the government that promoted healthy living. …..Click below to access the full sample solution (PDF)
