NURS-4220K Week 1: Discussion Defining Quality

Course
NURS-4220K Leadership Competencies-Summer

Preparing the Discussion:
  1. Post your definition of quality.

  2. Apply your definition to the work of one major quality theorist (e.g., Donabedian, Juran, Deming, or the Triple Aim – IHI/Berwick).

  3. Identify a practice problem you have experienced as a health care customer or practitioner.

  4. Explain how eliminating wasteful practices could have improved the experience.

  5. Include how your definition of quality applies to that experience.

  6. Support your response with references from professional nursing literature.

  7. Write at the capstone level.

How to Approach Each Question
1: Definition of Quality
  • Develop your own professional definition of quality in health care.

  • Include elements such as:

    • Patient safety

    • Effectiveness

    • Efficiency

    • Patient-centeredness

    • Equity

  • Keep it scholarly and precise.

2: Apply to a Major Theorist
  • Select one theorist:

    • Donabedian (structure, process, outcomes)

    • Deming (systems thinking, continuous improvement)

    • Juran (quality planning, control, improvement)

    • Triple Aim (IHI/Berwick) (better care, better health, lower cost)

  • Briefly explain the theory.

  • Connect your definition of quality directly to that theory.

3: Identify a Practice Problem
  • Choose a real experience (e.g., medication delays, long wait times, communication breakdowns, discharge confusion).

  • Ensure the problem relates to quality or patient outcomes.

  • Clearly describe the situation.

4: Eliminating Waste
  • Identify wasteful practices (e.g., duplication, inefficiency, poor communication, unnecessary steps).

  • Explain how reducing waste would improve:

    • Patient satisfaction

    • Safety

    • Outcomes

    • Cost-effectiveness

5: Apply Your Definition
  • Connect your earlier definition of quality directly to the example.

  • Show how the experience either reflected or failed to reflect your definition.

6: Literature Support
  • Use scholarly nursing sources.

  • Cite at least 2–3 peer-reviewed references.

  • Integrate literature throughout—not just at the end.

7: Capstone-Level Writing
  • Demonstrate:

    • Advanced critical thinking

    • Clear organization

    • Strong integration of theory and practice

    • Professional tone

    • Proper APA formatting

Sample Solution

A measurable patient-centered practice problem related to quality or safety that is relevant to my practice setting that I will focus on in my Capstone paper is healthcare-acquired infections (HAIs). HAIs are given to the patient by healthcare staff while in the hospital, and they are detected at least 48 hours after admission…..Click below to access the full sample solution (PDF)
