How to Approach Each Section
Discussion – Practice Problem
1–3: Identifying and Describing the Problem
Choose a measurable, patient-centered quality or safety issue (e.g., medication errors, falls, CAUTI, low patient satisfaction scores).
Ensure the problem:
Is tied to patient outcomes
Has available baseline data
Is specific (not broad like “improve safety”)
Briefly explain why it matters in your practice setting.
4: Leader Interview
Identify a nurse manager, director, quality coordinator, or other key leader.
Summarize their confirmation that the problem is important.
Explain how the discussion helped refine the focus (e.g., narrowed population, clarified measurable outcome).
5–6: Literature & Data Support
Cite current research showing:
The problem is common
It affects patient safety or outcomes
It requires nursing intervention
Describe your workplace data:
Rates (falls, errors, infections)
Trends
Patient satisfaction scores
Emphasize that you will use existing data only (no new data collection).
Peer Responses
7–9
Provide constructive feedback.
Suggest ways to make problems more measurable or specific.
Emphasize patient-centered outcomes.
Offer evidence-based insight or practical suggestions.
10
Ensure participation across three separate days.
