Preparing the Discussion

This discussion represents the first step in a three-step discussion series where you will choose your own pathophysiology adventure to analyze and present to the class. In this step of the discussion series, you will select a disease process for analysis and conduct initial research into the condition.

  1. How to Approach This Discussion:

    1. Select a Condition

      • Choose a disease process covered in the course that is relevant to your nursing practice or personal interest.

      • Tip: Consider conditions you may encounter in clinical practice or those that intrigue you.

    2. Explain Your Rationale

      • Briefly describe why you chose this condition.

      • Consider factors such as patient populations, prevalence, or professional relevance.

    3. Investigate Prevalence and Incidence

      • Research the condition’s prevalence and incidence in the United States.

      • Include affected populations, age groups, or risk factors.

    4. Review a Scholarly Article

      • Find one current, peer-reviewed article discussing your condition.

      • Summarize key points about the pathophysiology, manifestations, and clinical relevance.

      • Explain how the article enhances your understanding of the condition and its impact on patient care.

  • Key Concepts to Focus On:

    • Relevance of the condition to nursing practice

    • Population health and epidemiology (incidence/prevalence)

    • Linking pathophysiology to clinical manifestations

    • Using scholarly literature to support understanding

The condition I have selected is Type 2 Diabetes.

Briefly explain your rationale for selecting this particular condition. What influenced your selection?

Type 2 Diabetes is a common condition affecting my psychiatric patients.
