Nurses play an important role in advocating for health and engaging in policymaking to improve health outcomes, health equity, and the profession of nursing. Equipped with insights from clinical practice and competency in leadership and collaboration, nurses offer valuable contributions to the creation, planning, implementation, and evaluation of policy efforts.

The purpose of this assignment is to communicate the impact of a health-related policy issue, along with opportunities for nursing to advocate for and influence that issue. A video recording will be used to convey the information. Students are encouraged to select a policy issue of interest; examples might include an issue that impacts nursing practice or healthcare delivery at the organizational or community level or an issue that would be addressed on a larger scale, such as through state or federal legislation.

Instructions

Imagine that you are a nurse leader advocating for a policy issue that impacts the health of individuals and populations or professional nursing practice. You have been asked to share a testimony to advocate for the identified issue.

If your selected policy issue impacts health or nursing practice at the organizational or community-level, your testimony would be presented to an administrative body. For policy issues that impact health or nursing practice at a larger scale (i.e., state or national level), your testimony would be presented to a state or federal legislature.

As you consider a policy issue to address, it may be helpful to reflect upon issues that impact your current or previous work environments; unique needs of the populations served in your practice; issues that shape the health, safety, and well-being of individuals, communities, and populations; or the variables that influence health outcomes and disparities.

Be sure that your selected issue is different from issues addressed in other course assignments.

Create a 2 to 5 minute video recording of yourself addressing the legislative body for this purpose. In your recording, be sure to address the following:
